Salt systems are popular here and for good reason — softer-feeling water, no hauling jugs of chlorine, steadier sanitiser levels. But "salt water pool" gets sold as low-maintenance, and that is where the trouble starts.
1. Assuming it makes its own chlorine forever
A salt cell converts salt into chlorine while the pump runs. If the pump runtime is too short, the cell is scaled, the salt level is low or the water is cold, it produces less — sometimes far less — and the pool quietly runs under-sanitised for weeks before anything looks wrong.
2. Ignoring pH
Salt chlorine generation pushes pH up continuously. Left alone, a salt pool drifts alkaline, which reduces chlorine effectiveness and accelerates scale on tile and on the cell itself. Salt pools generally need more attention to pH than chlorine pools, not less.
3. Never cleaning the cell
In water this hard — most austin pools test between 250 and 450 ppm calcium hardness, and climb every summer as water evaporates — calcium plates onto the cell plates steadily. A cell cleaned on schedule lasts years longer than one that is only touched when the system throws an error, by which point output has been degraded for months.
4. Letting stabilizer drift
Salt pools still need cyanuric acid to protect the chlorine they generate from sunlight, and they still suffer when it climbs too high. Too low and the cell cannot keep up in summer; too high and the chlorine it makes is effectively locked away.
5. Skipping the physical work
A salt pool still needs vacuuming, brushing, tile scrubbing, skimming, baskets emptied and the filter serviced. The salt system replaced one chore — adding chlorine. It replaced none of the others.
