The five readings that matter

Free chlorine is the sanitiser actually available to kill bacteria and algae. It is the reading that moves fastest in hot weather and the one most DIY owners get wrong.

pH controls how effective that chlorine is. At a pH of 8.0, more than half of your chlorine is doing nothing. Left high, it also drives scale; left low, it eats plaster, grout and metal.

Total alkalinity is what keeps pH from swinging. Get alkalinity right and pH mostly takes care of itself.

Calcium hardness is the reading that decides whether your water scales your tile or dissolves your plaster. In hard-water regions it climbs every time water evaporates.

Cyanuric acid (stabilizer) protects chlorine from sunlight. Too little and chlorine burns off by mid-afternoon; too much and the chlorine you are paying for is locked up and ineffective.

We test on site with a professional reagent kit — not a strip dipped in the shallow end — and dose from the truck immediately. Nothing gets deferred to "next week."

Readings are logged, so when a pool starts trending — alkalinity creeping down, stabilizer climbing — we see it as a trend and fix the cause rather than chasing the symptom every seven days.
