Hard Water and Calcium Scale: A Texas Pool Owner's Guide

Most Austin pools test between 250 and 450 ppm calcium hardness, and climb every summer as water evaporates. Here is what that does to tile, plaster and equipment — and what actually keeps it under control.

Hard Water and Calcium Scale: A Texas Pool Owner's Guide

Local pools are filled with surface water drawn from the Highland Lakes, which picks up dissolved limestone on the way. Most Austin pools test between 250 and 450 ppm calcium hardness, and climb every summer as water evaporates.

Calcium hardness is the reading most owners never look at, and it is the one that decides whether your pool slowly scales up or slowly dissolves.

How scale forms

Water can only hold so much dissolved calcium. Push past that point — through evaporation, high pH, high alkalinity or rising temperature — and calcium carbonate comes out of solution and deposits on the nearest surface.

That surface is usually the tile at the waterline, because that is where evaporation concentrates minerals most. It also plates onto heater elements, salt cell plates and inside pipes, where you cannot see it and where it does the most financial damage.

What it looks like

  • A chalky white or grey band along the tile at water level
  • Rough patches on plaster or pebble that feel like sandpaper
  • Cloudy water that will not clear no matter how much you shock it
  • A salt system reporting low output or throwing a "check cell" error
  • A heater that runs longer to reach the same temperature

What actually controls it

pH discipline. Scale forms far more readily at high pH. Holding pH in the 7.4–7.6 range is the single most effective thing anyone does about scale, and it needs doing weekly — especially on salt pools, which drive pH up continuously.

Weekly tile scrubbing. A thin film brushes off. A season of buildup needs an acid wash or bead blasting, which is a specialist job with a specialist invoice.

Watching total alkalinity. Alkalinity that drifts high pushes pH up with it and drags calcium out of solution.

Partial drains, when justified. When hardness climbs far out of range, chemistry alone will not fix it — some water has to be replaced. That is a judgement call, not a routine, and it should be made on a test result rather than a hunch.

The version nobody warns you about

Scale on a salt cell is the expensive one. Calcium plates the cell, chlorine output drops, the pool runs under-sanitised for weeks, and by the time the system reports a fault the owner has often already fought an algae bloom they could not explain. Cells are consumables, but a cell that is cleaned on schedule lasts years longer than one that is not.
